Easy Scarecrow to Make from Scrap Wood

Today we are talking easy scrap wood fall decor. As a new homeowner I am constantly spending money on fixing up my house. This wall needs to be painted, I need grass seed to get a lawn, old appliances need to be replaced, the list goes on and on. On top of all of that of course I want my house to be seasonally decorated! So rather than running out to Target or Home Goods I’ve tried to be resourceful and make (most) of my own. 

Last year I saw this cute little wood scarecrow on Pinterest. I think it was being sold on Etsy, I can’t quite remember but it looked easy enough to try on my own. Best part is I was able to make this guy (or girl if you prefer) out of wood scraps and acrylic paint I had laying around the house. I did buy some raffia and flowers, but was able to use coupons which helped keep this super affordable. 

Materials: 

• 1×2 scraps
• Acrylic paint
• Stain (optional)
• Wood glue 
• Craft glue
• Raffia 
• Fake fall flowers

Step 1

Cut your wood scraps to desired size. You can kind of get creative here and make different heights. The hat doesn’t have to all match up. Use what you have! 

Step 2 

Glue the pieces of scrap wood together and let dry. Glue one piece horizontal to make the brim of the hat.

Step 3 

Get to painting! I stained the hat portion because I had some stain laying around and I thought it looked cool. Paint would also work though. I also painted the base “skin” tone and then let everything dry. After that dried I painted black circles and a white triangle for the nose. Once that was dry I went in and painted the whites of the eyes, the orange and yellow for the nose. Finally I added the finishing touches with the mouth, and outlining the nose. 

Step 4 (optional) 

You could definitely end at step three, but I think adding some flowers and raffia just add that little something, something that makes this extra cute. Again get creative and do what you think works best here. You could use all sorts of things to embellish the hat, even dried leaves from your yard! 

Another reason I really like this project is you can really make it your own. Mix it up and use left over scrap wood and craft supplies you have. You can make a full family of scarecrow to decorate inside and outside your house for fall!
